PowerShell: Check Number of Logical Processors

Need to check how many logical processors (threads) a CPU exposes to Windows - for performance planning, licensing checks, or understanding multi-threading capacity? This one-liner pulls it straight from the system.

Prerequisites:

  • Privileges: None
  • Module: Built-in, no import needed

Quick Command:

Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_Processor | Select-Object Name, NumberOfLogicalProcessors

Example Output:

Name NumberOfLogicalProcessors
---- -------------------------
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-14500T 20

How It Works:

  • Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_Processor queries the processor class, which reports details about each physical CPU installed in the system.
  • Name shows the exact processor model as reported by the manufacturer.
  • NumberOfLogicalProcessors returns the number of logical processors (threads) the CPU exposes to Windows - this is often higher than the physical core count, since technologies like hyper-threading let each physical core handle more than one thread at a time.
