# PowerShell: Get Motherboard Serial Number

Need to check the serial number of the motherboard - for asset tracking, warranty lookups, or hardware inventory? This one-liner pulls it straight from the system.

Prerequisites:

- Privileges: None
- Module: Built-in, no import needed

Quick Command:

```powershell
Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_BaseBoard | Select-Object SerialNumber
```

Example Output:

```powershell
SerialNumber
------------
/ABC123456789
```

How It Works:

- Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32\_BaseBoard queries the baseboard (motherboard) class - not to be confused with Win32\_BIOS, which reports on the firmware rather than the physical board itself.
- SerialNumber returns the manufacturer's serial number burned into the motherboard - useful for asset tracking or RMA/warranty lookups.

Pro Tip:

On virtual machines, this often comes back empty, since there's no physical motherboard with a manufacturer-assigned serial number.
